Physical Therapy Private Practice Owners: Do You Know Your Purpose?
Friday, February 20th, 2009
Erika Trimble asked:
Most physical therapy clinic owners see themselves as physical therapy professionals first and foremost. They are passionate about their practices. So passionate that one day they decide to work for themselves, to start their own business.
Certainly they considered the advantages of starting their own business: having a job they love, making their own decisions, setting their own schedule, pursuing a dream, making more money, and perhaps even working less.
The realities of working long hours, wearing two hats, juggling priorities, taking responsibility for successes and failures, placing personal money at risk and facing competition did not necessarily factor into their decision.
They tell me that they never truly considered the realities of becoming a business owner when they made the decision. They also didn’t have a background or training in business.
Although business success is associated with personal and professional characteristics, experience and skills, are just as important is clarity of business purpose.
To help you determine your business purpose, answer these coaching questions.
What are your compelling reasons for being in your own business?
In what ways is your business a vehicle for making this world a better place?
What core values does your business stand for?
Where is your business headed?
What do you want from your business?
I ask these questions because the common thread amongst great business achievers is that success is not their ultimate goal. They build causes; not businesses. I am helping you define your cause and business purpose.
Here are only a few of the benefits of having a crisp crystal clear business purpose:
- You can only plan for the future when you know exactly what the purpose of your business
is.
- You can easily distinguish good opportunities from poor ones.
- You can formulate objectives and goals easily and design strategies to achieve them.
- You can define your markets and marketing plans.
- Your colleagues and employees can express the essence of your business easily.
- A well defined purpose sets valuable boundaries for your business, and keeps you focused
on what your business aims to do and what it is best at doing.
Now take this important step and define the purpose of your business. The word “purpose” connotes: reason for being, principles/beliefs, intentions, motivation, and justification. It is giving definition to your business.
Now try writing a statement of your practice’s purpose.
Begin with writing down what first comes to mind about the purpose of your business.
Now try to create a statement, yes only one, which captures the essence of what you wrote. A business purpose needs to be concise, and crystal clear.
How you define yourself and your business are the single most powerful influences to your business success. Make sure you clearly define yourself and your business.
